Diploma Policy

Kumamoto Gakuen University, based on its founding principles of “Faculty and students working together,” “Freedom and open-mindedness” and “One school, one family” is committed to contributing to the progress of global culture by fostering human resources with a high ability to apply intellectual skills and are equipped with broad knowledge. In accordance with this commitment, the goal of our education is to develop human resources (1) who are equipped with broad knowledge and support the local community with their expertise and skills, (2) who nurture their intellectual interests in a university culture that values being free and open-minded, and tackle challenges in cooperation with a variety of people, and (3) who are international citizens with high intellectual abilities rooted in local communities and connected with the world. To fulfill our mission and achieve the above educational goals, we grant degrees to those who have acquired the following capabilities.

  1. Knowledge and Understanding
    Ability to deeply understand the contents of a specialized field and acquire and utilize multicultural and intercultural knowledge as well as knowledge of humanities, society, and nature.
  2. Communication Skills
    Ability to read, write, listen, and speak in Japanese and foreign languages, communicate with various types of people, perform presentations and participate in discussions.
  3. Quantitative Skills
    Ability to quantitatively analyze, understand, and express opinions on natural and social events.
  4. Information Literacy
    Ability to collect, analyze, and appropriately use various forms of information through the use of information and communication technology (ICT).
  5. Theoretical Thinking and Problem Solving Ability
    Ability to theoretically analyze information and knowledge from multiple viewpoints and contribute to problem solving.
  6. Self-initiative and Discipline, Teamwork, and Leadership
    Ability to discipline oneself and proactively face issues and solve problems and act as a team member or team leader in coordination and cooperation with others.
  7. Ethics and Social Responsibility
    Ability to proactively engage in the development of society while fulfilling obligations and exercising rights as a member of society based on ethical views in accordance with social codes and rules.
  8. Lifelong Learning Skills
    Ability to study with self-initiative and discipline even after graduation.
  9. Comprehensive Learning Capability
    Ability to comprehensively use knowledge, skills, attitudes, etc., to identify new challenges and creatively solve problems.

Curriculum Policy

For students to acquire the capabilities set forth in the above diploma policy, Kumamoto Gakuen University provides a systematically organized curriculum for general education, major field of study, physical education and career education through lectures, seminars, and practical training at basic, advanced, and applied levels. Each faculty is responsible for the program structure and integration of each degree program across courses. The overall content, methodology, and evaluation of the Kumamoto Gakuen University education are as below.

Courses for first-year and career education are provided for the purpose of clarification of the meaning of study in university, acquisition of basic capabilities necessary for a university student, and preparation of a study plan for the future.

For acquisition of academic abilities as a basis for obtaining broad knowledge, courses in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and physical education are provided.

For enhancing language proficiency and improving communication ability, foreign language courses are provided. For English, classes are organized to provide education according to the proficiency and progress of each student.

Education in the major field of study consists of lectures, seminars, practicums, and other courses provided at basic, advanced, and applied levels in accordance with characteristics of the major.

Each faculty and department provides seminars in small groups so that attention can be paid to individual students.

Extramural learning experiences at home and abroad are offered, in which students gain practical experience and learn about problems and the methods to solve them.

Education methods such as active learning and PBL (Project Based Learning) are incorporated.

By visualizing the results of education to allow constant improvement, acquisition of the capabilities set forth in the diploma policy are appropriately evaluated.

At the time of graduation, the overall capabilities of students in terms of acquired knowledge and integrated skills are evaluated.

Admissions Policy

Kumamoto Gakuen University places emphasis on the three elements of academic ability as defined by MEXT (fundamental knowledge and skills, ability to utilize knowledge and skills and think, judge, and express ideas by oneself, and motivation to learn) as basic academic skills obtained through high school or equivalent. It seeks individuals who evidence knowledge, skills, thinking, judgment, self-expression, and a positive attitude towards study, and who satisfy the conditions below. Various methods are implemented to appropriately select students from among the applicants.

  1. Individuals with capabilities and expertise as set forth in the diploma policy and who are interested in using their knowledge creatively.
  2. Individuals with broad knowledge who are willing to support the local community with their expertise and skills.
  3. Individuals who can think freely in a multicultural society and aim at solving problems in cooperation with a variety of people.
  4. Individuals who want to be global citizens with high intellectual ability, rooted in the local community and connected with the world.
