Diploma Policy
Reflecting the history of the Institute of Oriental Languages and the founding spirit of Kumamoto Gakuen University, the Faculty of Foreign Studies certifies the graduation of those who satisfy the following conditions:
Having culture and knowledge that enable a high level of reading and writing after reacquiring an understanding of the native language objectively and broadly through study of a foreign language.
Capable of extracting information and knowledge in a foreign language and appropriately conveying it in the native language.
Capable of extracting information and knowledge in the native language and appropriately conveying it in a foreign language.
Capable of effectively using appropriate expressions in the foreign and native languages in a variety of public occasions and other situations.
Capable of viewing oneself from the viewpoint of a different culture and acting competently in a foreign culture.

The education at the Faculty of Foreign Studies consists of multifaceted disciplines, mutually supporting studies in related academic fields. Since language is also related to every area of life, various forms of education are provided.
Admission Policy
In order to assess the extent to which the applicants satisfy the five conditions listed below and possess knowledge, thinking skills, judgment, expressiveness and a disposition to learn proactively in collaboration with a diversity of people, we will use a variety of screening methods, including interviews, examinations for recommended students from high schools, and achievement tests.
Those who possess a habit of learning independently every day;
Those who want to major in English possess a basic knowledge of English;
Those who want to major in Chinese or Korean possess the ability to understand their first language appropriately and express themselves adequately;
Those who have an interest in related areas such as culture and history of the language in which they will major;
Those who are motivated to learn about various lifestyles and cultures, and wish to become meaningfully engaged in Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan and the world by using foreign languages in the future.
The Department of English is equipped with a diverse faculty and a comprehensive study abroad program. Students learn English from various perspectives in order to achieve intercultural understanding and the skills needed to communicate and participate in the international community.
The origin of the East Asian Studies Department, which has a long tradition, lies in the predecessor of KGU, the Institute of Oriental Languages. Students learn how to communicate in a multicultural world. A comprehensive curriculum gets students in touch with a range of topics from across East Asia.
